Currently: Research Assistant to Dr Linda Wooldridge. Dept of Immunity, Infection and Biochemistry, Cardiff University
October 2003 to April 2007: Research Assistant to Dr Paul Brennan in the Dept of Medical Biochemistry and Immunology in Cardiff University, (formerly UWCM), supported by Tenovus the cancer charity. Here my initial research was focussed towards the study of Epstein-Barr Virus, (EBV), in particular the cell signalling processes involved. My research then moved towards the study of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia, (CLL), in collaboration with Dr Chris Pepper, Dr Saman Hewamana and Dr Chris Fegan. With access to primary CLL patient samples we were able to use Biochemical and Cellular techniques to study the intra-cellular activation of this disease. It was while working in this position with scientists who inspired me, my motivation to take my research career further heightened. (see publication list ref 1, 4, 5, 6 and posters)
July 2002 to October 2003: Research Technician in the Dept of Neuropsychiatric Genetics in Cardiff University, (formerly UWCM). My main work here was in the research of the neuropsychiatric disorder Schizophrenia. This work involved genetic techniques such as PCR, ABI genetic sequencers and analysis of SNP`s (Single Nuclear Polymorphisms) in Schizophrenia samples.
October 1997 to June 2001: Studied at the University of Wales Institute Cardiff and being awarded my degree in Biomedical Sciences. My final year project included a collaboration with the UWCM in the study of Statins in treatment of Diabetes type II.
